Sunday Deliberations: The Midi-Skirt

Just when we shorties were getting comfortable wearing the maxi, fashion decided to introduce the midi. Yes, the midi-skirt (or dress).  On the one hand, maxi dresses and skirts are pretty easy to pull off. They can elongate the body while being be worn with both flats and heels. The midi-skirt, on the other hand, has the potential to completely cut off the body at the legs.

Some tips on how to wear the midi:

  • A fitted top flatters your frame and defines your waist, while the full calf-length skirt floats away from the body and balances your top half. However, a flowy top can pull this look off just as well with proper definition of the waist. Consider a belt. You don't want to add bulk to your top half with a billowy blouse or one that covers your waist.
  • The skirt is probably the must un-flattering if it hits the widest part of your calf (but hey, if you have tiny calves anyway, this point could be moot). Choose either a skirt that hits just below the calf, or if you are on the shorter side, right above the calf (just below the knee).
  • If you're petite, I highly recommend a platform or wedge to help elongate the legs and make you appear taller, which is key successfully pulling off this style. You'll likely want to avoid pairing the midi skirt with flats. I love the midi-skirt with a chunkier heel. It kind of gives it a '50s-type feel:

Can you imagine midi-skirts with knee-high boots for fall?? OOH!

The midi-skirt probably won't be a part of my wardrobe, though I can't say I wouldn't ever completely rule it out. Some of the looks that can be put together with it are really quite stunning. What do you think of the midi? Will you be adding it to your closet this season?

I didn't think I would ever fall for this trend but I found this skirt from H&M http://fitreview.com/view/228 that I am just IN LOVE with (except for the wonky zipper).  I was surprised that I was able to pull this length off!

Thanks for the tips! I've been ambivalent about the midi-skirt length because I didn't think it would flatter my short legs, but I'll have to see if there are any midi-skirts that catch my eye and try out your style suggestions.  :)

Great tips! I used to love this length but have long ago thrown or altered those skirts. No matter what I wear on top, I look even shorter and drowning in so much material. I can still hear this older lady at work tell another co-worker "why hide lovely young legs while you still have them"?
