Five-item Challenge: 2013 edition.

I'm very happy with all of my purchases last year. For the most part I made really smart choices, although I spent quite a bit of money--more than I had planned. However, most of it went towards investing and growing my work wardrobe. Maybe I subconsciously knew I was going to get a job in the new year, because when I received the job offer, I didn't feel like I had to go out and buy new things except for a new suit and a practical work tote. I am pretty happy it happened the way it did because it allowed me to put a lot of thought into my purchases rather than be pressured into buying a bunch of things for the sake of having something to wear to work. When that happens, I notice that I don't make smart choices, but I'm really pleased with my new additions over the past year. I still have quite a few gaps including some sheath dresses, sleeveless blouses, a pair of classic knee-high boots, and nude pumps but I am in no rush to fill those holes just yet.

In an attempt to curb spending (although I don't think I'm going to have much time to shop in the next few months),  like last year in the first quarter (January-March), I'm going to once again take on the Five-Item Challenge. I am going to keep the rules the same:

I am allowed to buy only 5 items for the next three months including accessories, but not including necessities like underwear and socks or items purchased with gift cards. There is no price limit, but I obviously want to do the best I can in the savings department. This will hopefully cut down on my spending for the months of January, February, and March while putting a lot of thought into my purchases focusing on needs vs. wants and paying close attention to the quality of items.
BUT, I will add a small allowance of accessories of $20 per month. Any accessory purchased over the $20 allowance will count as one item. Last year I was successful, so I am hoping for a repeat. Anyone else with me this year? ;)

I should also mention that I am now also on Instagram. You probably won't believe this, but up until a few weeks ago, I did not own a smartphone! I have now joined the 21st century. LOL. So if you are interested in a small peek into my personal life and a few outfits (even though I have yet to get into the habit of snapping them) you can follow me here!

I love the idea of the 5 item challenge, but I think it's best to set a budget each month. Otherwise you could be buying 5 x $100 items thinking that you've saved money when in fact you're spending more than usual.

I have found that only buying things with cash curbs my spending. If you don't have it, you can't buy it!

I've not got a smart phone either, but I'm not contemplating the ipod touch in order to start sharing on instagram.

I like this idea! I was just making a list of the few classic items I really need in my wardrobe, but I never fail to be distracted by lots of "wants" when shopping. I don't know if I'm quite prepared to take this challenge on myself, but I will definitely be cheering you on!

I really enjoyed your last 5 item challenge so am looking forward to seeing it again!

This year I would like to put more thoughts into what I buy rather than rushing to buy something to wear. I hope it works for me.

Oh, I do not own smartphone yet. One of my phones is at least 5 years old before smartphone actually. (the other one is temporary one so no 'smart' phone anyway). I'm planning to get one once starting a new job!
